How these pages are made
Rung publishes a page for each of 922 occupations that clears the public evidence floor, a page for each of 22 fields of work, and a page for several situations people start a resume from, in multiple languages. This page says how they are made, so nobody has to take what they are reading on trust.
What is a fact here, and where it comes from
The duties, the skills, the job titles and the descriptions are records from O*NET, the occupational database published by the US Department of Labor. The pay figures are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Neither is Rung's, neither is estimated, and neither is adjusted.
Every page prints the release it ships and the month it was refreshed, at the bottom, under "Where these numbers come from". Those are read from the data on the way out, never typed into the page, so a page cannot claim a release it is not carrying. Credits lists every source and its licence.
What a model writes, and when it runs
The records are the Department of Labor's. Many of the sentences are Rung's. A task recorded as "Examine mouth, teeth, gums, or related facial structures" is not a line anyone would put on a resume, so Rung writes the plain version, and the same is true of the skill phrases, the worked example resume, and the Spanish throughout.
That writing happens once, when the data is built, and the result is committed and reviewable. No model runs when you open one of these pages, and nothing on them is generated for you or about you. Two people opening the same page get the same page. The part of Rung that builds these pages is checked to have no way of reaching a model or the network at all.
Inside the product it is different, and Accuracy covers that: there, a model writes from your answers, and every line is shown back to you before anything is kept.
What is deliberately left off
- Occupations with too little to say. A page is published only where the records carry at least five plain-language duties and a wage figure. Below that it would be a template with a name dropped into it, which is worth nobody's visit.
- Eight skill chips, on eight occupations. The chips on a job page are real recorded activities, and the page invites a person to claim one as their own. Activities involving weapons or physical force are withheld from correctional officers, their supervisors, animal control workers and security guards, because a line saying someone used force on people is a document that can be read back at them. Activities describing the handling of human remains are withheld from embalmers, crematory operators, morticians and funeral attendants, because offered in a row beside "Managing schedules" the blunt wording reads as indifference to the family the work serves. Each entry carries its reason in the code beside it, so a later reader has a specific decision to disagree with, not an unexplained list. The chip is removed and never reworded, because a gentler phrase for the same activity would be worse than its absence.
How a page is kept honest
No page here is edited by hand. Every one is produced from the committed data, and a check rebuilds all of them and compares the result against what is published, so an edit made directly to a page fails loudly instead of quietly surviving. Alongside it run checks that every figure traces to a committed file, that no page is left unreachable from the others, and that each page says which release it carries.
Authorship and translation review
Rung's team maintains these pages using the method above. Automated tests check the published pages and their source data.
